On 17th June 2011, Liverpool John Moores University's (JMU) Sociology department welcomed the study group for a one day conference. The event was superbly organised by Vicky Canning, an active study group member and lecturer and PhD candidate at JMU.

Conference Review (by JMU)

 

 The event was organised by Vicky Canning, a lecturer and PhD candidate on behalf of the rights group, as well as the Sociology team and the Centre for the Study of Crime, Criminalisation and Social Exclusion.

 

Vicky stated, “We’ve been delighted to have welcomed presenters from across the UK and Europe to engage in the emerging subjects related to the Sociology of Rights, and human rights more generally. The standard of presentations and overall content has been academically engaging and challenging, as well as building on activist agendas. The conference has highlighted the extent to which rights are relevant across whole disciplines, that it is important to continue to lobby for the implementation of rights, and that there is always room for social improvement through critical research and knowledge sharing.”

 

Speakers came from a range of institutions and subject areas to deliver an engaging range of presentations, including two co-conveners of the Rights Group: Dr. Matthew Waites and Dr. Damien Short. Likewise, delegates offered interesting insights in group discussions, and responded with positive feedback and remarks such as:
